The Welland Canal is one of Niagara Regions most popular attractions. An engineering marvel, it continues to thrive with business and tourist alike. When I was but a young soul, my father worked at Port Weller Dry Docks just past Lock One of the current Welland Canal, and I would get to tour the new ships that they built. This fascinated me, and along with spending much time around the canal, I grew more interested in it. I did not know at the time that this was the fourth Welland Canal and that there was three others that were built before this one. I had often hiked along the remains of the third Welland Canal but at the time only knew it was "the old canal". A year or so ago, I began to research it and found there to be numerous remains of the old canals around the region and decided that I was going to find all possible remains in hope of promoting the need to conserve the history in this region and possibly encourage others to take in interest in the Canal and its history. Below you find a not only the history of the Canal but photo tours of the old canal remains that still exist today! It is my deepest hope that I, along with others, can encourage people to preserve such a rich history and prevent them from disappearing before others can appreciate them as much as I do.

Disclaimer : -- Keep in mind this is a massive undertaking as the canals ran from St.Catharines, Ontario to Port Colborne, Ontario. While I have trekked many hours there is still much to find. Also at site launch I have just posted the pictures that I have taken so far, I am in the process of re-taking pictures to make the phototours a little more organized. Keep checking the updates to see when more of the phototours get added and for the current time please be patient!.
